- Henry is at home, He wants to leave for war. His mother thinks it's a bad idea and tells him not to be too heroic, or else he may risk getting himself killed. (chapter 1)
- Scene 4
- Henry is at camp. He heard gossip that the enemy may attack soon. He is nervous about what will happen. He doesn't know if he will fight or run away in the heat of the moment, and this makes him anxious. (chapters 2-3)
- Scene 5
- Henry's army (Union) goes to war against the Confederates. Sometimes they win, and sometimes they lose. They battle many times throughout the course of this book.
- Scene 6
- After a battle, Henry watches his friend Jim the tall soldier die in a field. This puts Henry in a very sad mood. He wishes he was dead in a field too. (chapters 9-10)
- In another battle, the color bearer is shot and killed. Henry and his friend Wilson charge into the danger to retrieve the flag. The officers notice this act of bravery. (chapter 19)

- Henry and Wilson are heroes! They feel very confident. They are celebrated after the war.
