- These were the leaders of Rome. Like other senior magistrates, they wore a white toga with a purple stripe. Consuls kept many of the powers of the original Roman kings in military, religious and legal areas, including being commander-in-chief of the military

- As the area controlled by Rome increased, the consuls could not supervise all the administration, so praetors took over the legal responsibilities of consuls. When administration of the expanding republic became more complex, the number of praetors increased from two to four and then to six.

- Quaestors. These were treasurers who looked after finances.
