- "'Don't nobody yell,' she said softly. 'Just back up slow and quiet to the ladder and climb up to the loft...'" (Page 1)

- "'Don't let's go, Mama,' Lyddie pleaded softly. 'Please, Mama.' But her mama only stared at the fireplace, rocking slowly back and forth..." (Page 5)

- "And, finally, she gave her a tiny cloth purse with five silver dollars in it. 'It's too much,' Lyddie protested." (Page 46)

- In this situation, the conflict is Person vs. Nature as a bear is part of nature and Lyddie is using her knowledge to fend off the bear and get her and her family away safely
- We see that this scene in the book is Person vs. Person because Lyddie is trying to get her mother to see the situation of the world "ending" her way
- This situation is a Person vs. Self because Lyddie is debating with herself whether to take it, or refuse all the food, clothing, and money
