- The enzyme Amylase start to break down the starch from carbohydrate in the bread into glucose. The saliva breaks the big pieces of food into small pieces.
- The pieces of food go through the oesophagus into the stomach. The protein in the cheese and butter are broken down into amino acids. The hydrochloric acid and the stomach squeezing break food into smaller pieces and soluble acids are absorbed. The soluble fibres(From the lettuce) are dissolved here and in the small intestine. It will remain as a gel and be absorbed in the large intestine.
- The starch and protein are fully broken down here. The fats are broken down into fatty acids. These and the vitamins are absorbed by villus which are hair like structures that increases surface area, where they inter capillaries where the blood streams take them for cellular respiration
- Soluble fibres are absorbed with the liquid.
- The large intestine drains all the water, making the waste into faeces, while the insoluble acid is added to it, making them harder and sticks together in the rectum.

- The faeces is released from the anus.
