  • Vasco Da Gama, The Portuguese sailor discovered a sea route to India in 1498. He had travelled all around Africa to reach India. He had landed in Calicut, Kerala.
  •  I am the first European to reach India by sea route.
  • He then met King Zamorin of Calicut to seek permission for establishing trade with India. He also captured some places - Goa, Daman and Diu.

  • The British heard that many European countries were going to India. They also went to India by sea route and met King Jahangir. They were granted permission to have a factory in Surat, Gujarat.
  • Then the Danish and French also arrived in India and all European countries formed East India Companies.

  • The Battle of Plassey was fought between the Nawab of Bengal Siraj-ud-Daulah and English East India Company (EEIC) in 1757.The Battle of Buxar was fought between Mir Qasim and EEIC in 1764.The growing discontent among the Indians against the British led to the Revolt of 1857. The rule of EEIC ended after the Revolt and Queen Victoria took over Indian Administration.The Britishers came up with a technique to take over more kingdoms which was called Doctrine of Lapse. It meant that whenever a king does not have a son or daughter the Britishers would take over the kingdom.
