  • By the late 1760's George Washington had experienced the first hand effects of rising taxes put on the colonists by the British. He realized that it was in the best interest of the colonists to declare independence from England. He served
  •  as a delegate to the first continental congress in 1774 in Philadelphia. By the time the second continental congress came together, a year later the American Revolution had begun and George Washington was named Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. by the end of the war he was declared a national hero.

  • in 1783 he believed he had done his duty and gave up his command of the army and returned home to Mount Vernon so he could go back to being a farmer and family man.
  • 1st US President.
  • however in 1787 he was asked to attend the constitutional convention in Philadelphia and lead the committee to draft the new constitution. His impressive leadership there convinced the delegates that he was by far the most qualified man to become the nations 1st President. 
  • the 1st Presidential election was held on Jan. 7th 1789. Washington won a Jonh Adams became the nations 1st Vice President.
  • He accomplished many great things while serving as the 1st US President. he was the 1st example for every new President to come. He served a 2 year term but declined a 3rd one.
  • 57 year old Washington was inaugurated on April 30th 1789 in NY City.
  • in December 1799, he caught a cold after inspecting his properties in the rain. the cold developed in to a throat infection and passed away on the night of December 14th 1799 at the age of 67. He was entombed at mount Vernon which in 1960 was designated a national historic landmark.
  • He finaly retired in 1796 and returned to mount vernon and devoted his attedntions to making his plantation as it had been before he had become president.
  • He left one of the most long-lasting legacies of any american in history. He was known as the," father of his country".his face apeers on the us doller bill, quarter, and is taught about and payed tribute to in dozens of US schools.in addition, there is a state, the capital and towns named after him..
