- America gained its independence during the revolutionary war in 1783
- Purpose of the 2nd Constitutional Convention
- At first the government created the Articles of confederation but soon after that document was found to be ineffective and America was falling apart
- So they decide it was time to make a change
- Delegates from all the states gathered at the independence hall in Pennsylvania to begin the long process of rewriting the foundation of our government.
- They decide to scrap the article of confederation completely and start from scratch
- We need to come together as a government and create a document that represents our people with more federal power!
- Delegates fought over equal and fair representation in congress
- We need the right balance not too much federal power but more than we have now!

- I am William Livingston and I represent New Jersey at the convention

- I also represent the New Jersey Plan which aims to give equal representation in Congress to all states no matter how big they are.
- James Madison
- Im James Madison and I represent the Virginia Plan which fights to give states representation in Congress based off population of that state.
- States with larger populations have more representation in Congress
- State delegates argued for weeks over which plan they should adopt. The states were split and a compromise was in need.

- How about we split Congress into two parts a house of representatives and a senate? a states representation in the house can be based off a state's population and the Senate can give every state equal representation. That way we're both happy!
