- "Oh don't do it again, Tom, it is too horrid,"
- "Listen! Ahhh!"
- Oh no!! What if we never make it out! Oh I miss everyone so much, I'm scared!
- "It is horrid, but I better, Becky; they might hear us, you know."
- "Becky, I was such a fool! Such a fool! I never thought we might want to come back! No, I can't find the way. It's all mixed up."
- "Oh,Tom, you didn't make any marks!"
- Tom and Becky are in the cave and Tom tells her to listen. Tom shouts and just listens as the voice echos through each cave wall. Becky is worried because all they hear is silence.
- "Tom,Tom, we're lost! We're lost! We never, never can get out of this awful place! Oh why did we ever leave the others?
- She seems so hopeless! I hope I don't loose her!
- The "might" worried them even more worried, "it so confessed a perishing hope," They stood there and listen but heard no result. Tom and Becky feared there lives
- Oh, Becky, I'm so sorry! This wasn't supposed to happen!
- Tom turns around to back track at once, and hurried his steps. It was a short time before a certain indecision in his manner another act that made Becky fearful. He couldn't find his way back! Becky becomes upset and freaks out because they are lost!
- Becky sinks to the ground and "burst into such a frenzy of crying that Tom was appalled with the idea that she might die, or lose her reason." Tom began hug Becky and try to comfort her ,but he couldn't.
- Tom and Becky go wandering to try to find their way out but are become less hopeful on finding their way out. Becky becomes more weak.
- Eventually Tom and Becky's candle blew out. This meant so much. Words were not needed. Becky understood, her hope died again.
