The Thornton Affair was an incident involving the military of the United States and Mexico that caused President James K. Polk to declare a declaration of war against Mexico in 1846, resulting in the Mexican-American War.
During the Mexican-American War, US soldiers led by General Winfield Scott enter Mexico City and raise the American flag over the Montezuma Palace, capping a devastating offensive that began six months earlier with an assault operation at Vera Cruz.
