  • The Winter at Valley Forge (1777)
  • George Washington's Quarters
  • Soldiers Quarters
  • In fall of 1777, Washington and his army moved a little south of New Jersey to defend their capital from the British. They lost to the British and had to retreat. With winter approaching fast, Washington moved his army to Valley Forge on the Schuylkill River. It was definitely a tough winter but the troops built over 2,000 log huts and eventually made a bridge over the Schuylkill.
  • Problems Faced by the Soldiers #1
  • George Washington had a nice, sort of modern-looking house to be his quarters. This is where he did all the work he needed to do as the general, and it was also like his household.
  • Problems Faced by the Soldiers #2
  • Over 2,000 huts at valley forge held 12,000 to 14,000 soldiers during the six months they stayed there for the winter encampment.
  • Training with Baron Fredrick von Steuben
  • At Valley forge, there was a shortage of pretty much everything. Food, Clothes, all things needed to survive.
  • Another problem was lots of soldiers were getting sick with disease and hunger. Lots of them were fighting this just to stay alive. People were getting so sick they started dying.
  • On February 23, 1778, Baron Friedrich von Steuben came to the camp. Von Steuben was asked to create a training program for the soldiers. Von Steuben reorganized the camp.
