- In 1788, France was in a financial crisis due years of overspending and bad harvests and involvement in various wars , and King Louis called for an assembly of the three estates to address the situation. In 1789, the three estate generals met to discuss a problem that they were all confronting. With all of the bickering among the states, the Third Estate General quickly became enraged that their voices were not being heard by the others and claimed to be genuine representatives of the French people and France. This way of thinking led to the formation of the National Assembly.

- The Third Estate agreed to hold a discussion about the National Assembly on the tennis court. Other estate members who were interested in reform also joined the gathering. Together they all pledged to protect France and to stay united until a constitution was drafted. The King was dissatisfied with the decisions made by his subjects. Rumors arose that he would disrupt the sessions, but they were still able to complete the Constitution of 1791, which established a limited monarchy and a new legislative assembly to create laws, collect taxes, and make decisions.

- We demand gunpowder !!
- On July 14, 1789, there were rumors that the royal army was taking over the capital. This sparked outrage among Parisians, who began to demand gunpowder and weapons from the Bastille, a former prison. Over 800 individuals gathered to revolt and protect themselves against the monarch and his soldiers. The commander of the king's army was furious and planned to murder those who rebelled against him. The people were disappointed by the king's reaction to their actions leading up to the revolution.
