- Event 1

- "I spent that day mostly in the woods, having the alternative before me,—to go home and be whipped to death, or stay in the woods and be starved to death. ”
- Event 2

- Event 3
- That night, I fell in with Sandy Jenkins, a slave with whom I was somewhat acquainted.
- Douglass is worked very hard by Covey and is beaten often.
- Event 4
- I resolved to fight; and, suiting my action to the resolution, I seized Covey hard by the throat; and as I did so, I rose
- He suffers from Heat Stroke, and Mr. Covey gives him a harsh beating. Douglass runs into the forest. Away from the farm.
- Event 5
- This battle with Mr. Covey was the turning-point in my career as a slave. It rekindled the few expiring embers of freedom, and revived within me a sense of my own manhood.
- He ran into Sandy Jenkins. He stayed at their place for the night. He was given this root for good luck.
- Douglass returns to the farm. After Douglass returns, Covey tackles him in the loft and Douglass fights back. Douglass eventually wins after 2 hours of fighting
- Once Douglass fought back, he regained his sense of humanity, hope, and independence. He was never fully enslaved again.
