- (Chapter 9)- The debate competition's state champions are Justyce and SJ. They defend against racial profiling, which SJ proposed as a subject. Justyce and SJ wait for their results while standing with their arms encircled after the argument. They successfully explain their positions after the debate, winning and earning the title of state champions.
- “Hush it. You can tell me later.”
- “S, I just wanna sa—”
- “Bossy.”
- “And your state champions in the advanced pairs argumentationdivision: from Braselton Preparatory Academy, Justyce McAllister and Sarah-Jane Friedman!”
- "Man, I’m sick of y’all acting like you got all this leeway."
- (Chapter 10-12)- When Blake and Jared act insensitively during his party, Justyce becomes upset and declines Manny's offer to drive him back to school. Having finally realized his buddies' bigotry, Manny approaches Justyce's dorm room with a bandaged hand and injured lip to inform her that he has quit the basketball team.
- "Jus, let’s just go."
- "Dude, don’t disrespect my bros at my party."
- (Chapter 13)- On a Saturday morning, Manny picks Justyce up so they can go trekking. Forcing assault accusations against him, Manny is enraged with Jared's father and drives around blaring music. The music is being loudly blared when a white man in a white Suburban shouts at the lads to turn it down. Manny provokes the man by acting as though he can't hear and then cranking up the sound. In return, the man receives a middle finger from him and a snide remark from him. Although Manny swears as the story closes, Justyce attempts to soothe him.
- “Maybe we should turn it down.”
- “You weren’t lying about him being red! It’s like all the blood in his body has rushed up into his face.”
- “I SAID TURN THAT SH*T DOWN!”
