- We also use astrological cycles to aid in planting and harvesting as well as predict solar eclipses.
- The Maya Civilization was located in modern-day Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize, and Guatemala. They ruled between 420 BC and 900 BC. They were divided into city-states, including one of the largest ones, Tikal.
- Contributions
- We use our pyramids for religious ceremonies and make offerings to the gods. There are tombs for rulers, sacrifices, and valuable goods
- While the Maya were in power they believed that the king was given the right to rule by the gods. The means were divided between nobles, commoners, serfs, and slaves.

- The Maya developed the most advanced writing system in the ancient Americas. As well as developing two calendars that are as precise as those we use today.

- The Maya were very gifted in mathematics making one of their most important accomplishments the awareness of zero. The pyramids in Maya cities are the most recognizable buildings at the archeological sites.
- From the late eighth through the end of the ninth century, something unknown happened to the Maya civilization. One by one, the Classic cities in the southern lowlands were abandoned, and by 900 B.C, the Maya civilization in that region had collapsed.
- There are many theories of why the Maya civilization may have collapsed. Some believe that the Maya had exhausted the environment. Others claim an extremely long, intense period of drought or it might have been the result of warfare.
