- Desiree hears that stella was white passing, "she had never imagined that Stella kept big secrets from her"(Bennett 70). This is one of the earliest instances of Stella keeping secrets from family. This sets the reader up to know that she has changed from being that good girl she used to be.

- Stella implants doubt into her daughter's head, "she thinks I'm gambling away my future. And maybe I am. Hardly anyone makes it, right?"(Bennett 237).

- Stella is shown as elegant, "stella wore a long green dress, her hair into a low bun. Diamond earrings and black pumps"(Bennett 247).
