- Franek wants Elie's gold tooth. Franek beats up Elies's father because Elie's father can't march correctly.
- Man Vs Nature
- Elie is fighting with himself when he had painful frostbite on his foot. He kept telling himself to just keep running, keep running, even when his foot was in so much pain from the frostbite's effects.
- Man Vs Society
- "Jews were prohibited from leaving their residences for three days, under penalty of death." (Wiesel 10)
- Elie is slowly starting to lose his faith in God. Elie thinks God wouldn't allow what was happing to the Jews to take place.

- Elie and his father found a small shed to hide in. Because of how cold Elie was the snow no longer felt cold, but like a warm carpet. If Elie falls asleep he is likely not going to wake up.
- "The snow seemed to me like a very soft, very warm carpet. I fell asleep." (Wiesel 88)
- The Jews were forced to stay in their houses for 3 days. Along with this rule, there are many other harsh rules Jews have to follow ordered by the Germans.
