- Rules of the game is a chess prodigy with Waverly battling her chess opponents and her mother.

- It is hard for me to practice with you looking at me mom.
- The setting of the story takes place in San Francisco's Chinatown

- " Sometimes you need to lose pieces to get ahead."
- Waverly's mom is bragging to everyone about her success in playing chess, and Waverly doesn't like that.
- IMAGERY
- "Father down the street was Ping Yuen Fish Market. The front window displayed a tank crowded with doomed fish and turtles struggling to gain foot on the slimy green-tiled sides."
- Waverly Jong is the protagonist and her mother Lindo Jong is the antagonist.
- The main message of the story is her mother pressuring her to play chess and Waverly starts to question if she wants to plat chess anymore.
- "Next time win more lose less".
