  • AIM was founded in the late 1960s by activists.
  • Who were the AIM participants?
  • The American Indian Movement was started by indigenous Indians in the United States
  • Now, lets change gears to the AIM goals
  • It was to fight social injustices including police brutalities, lack of occupation and colonialism
  • Also, AIM aimedtowards ensuring the native Indians enjoyed the rights and privileges of being in the country.
  • For instance, most bureaucrats and lawmakers failed to acknowledge that the native Indians were true members of the society.
  • Generally, they were not enjoying the federal resources, but instead relied on the power of their fragmented groups.
  • Contrarily, they isolated them in masses of cities, or let the tribes remain constrained at reservations
  • AIM used religion as the basis of forming its principles and goals while striving to get recognition and assume leadership positions.
  • For instance, the native Indians had formed the Ghost Dance religion which gave the populations the conviction of their worth and helped them express their heritage.
  • The group functioned as the top organization in the hierarchy of the natives, and it focused on religious affairs.
  • Generally, the group relied on religious guidance, and based their goals and principles on the religion.
