- HI! Im Maria Montessori. The building you see behind me is the school that I just opened here in Rome! Its name is "Casa Dei Bambini" or known as "Childrens House"!
- I was born on august 31st, 1870 in Chiaravalle, Italy! Ever since I was young I had a wide interest in learning, and education! I eventually lived in Rome and was grown up influenced by many museums, libraries, and fine schools!
- At age 13 I joined an all boys technical institute to pursue my passion as an engineer. Later I changed my mind and wanted to become a doctor instead! I applied to the University of Rome's medical program, but got declined.
- I then worked so hard and reapplied and got accepted! I graduated from medical school in 1896 as one of Italy's first female physicians! In my first couple years I was working as a psychiatrist and developed a bigger interest in education
- In my studies I wanted to gain more knowledge about teaching children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I was appointed co-director of a training institute for special education teachers! After observing different methods, many children made unexpected gains and my program was proclaimed a success!
- In 1907 I officially opened a full day childcare center for kids ages 3-7. Using learning materials and a classroom environment that fostered natural desire to learn and provided freedom for the kids to use their own materials.
- The children thrived exhibiting concentration, attention and spontaneous self discipline! The "Montessori Method" Attracted prominent educators, journalists, and public figures.
- By 1910 Montessori schools (named after me) could be found in Western Europe and were being established all around the world! Including the US, where the first Montessori school opened in Tarrytown, NY, 1911.
