- Louis Pasteur was born on December 27, 1822 in Dole, son of Jean-Joseph Pasteur and Jeanne-Étiennette Roqui. The couple had five children, but only two of them survived to adulthood: Jean-Baptiste and Marie-Luise. The other three died early, affected by typhus.

- His first ambition was to be an art teacher. In 1842, after being a teacher at the Royal School of Besançon, he obtained his university degree from Bachelier ès Sciences Mathématiques. In August 1847 he obtained his Doctorate in Sciences (Docteur ès Sciences) at the Faculty of Sciences in Paris, with a thesis in Physics. Chemistry was a French chemist, physicist, mathematician and bacteriologist.
