- Discrimination that took place
- How racism impacted his life
- Doug Nicholls was born on the 9th of December 1906 amongst the Yorta Yorta people. Unfortunately, at age 8 in 1914 he watched police forcibly remove his sister Hilda due to current government policies in place at the time.
- Response to discrimination
- Nicholls left school at age 14 due to the Aborigines Protection Board which forced him to leave his home and work as a labourer.
- Support Structures

- His dream career nearly didn't start due to racism and he felt people judged him based on who he was. Therefore, he often didn't feel accepted and during his sport career sat alone as he felt excluded.
- Legacy
- Federal Council for the Advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
- In his lifetime, he overcame the trauma of losing his sister, as well as facing racism and prejudice. He succeeded in being a runner, boxer, football player, pastor, activist, Father of the Year and Governor of South Australia.
- Doug's establishment of the first Aboriginal Church of Christ in Australia was supported by the Church of Christ Council. His daughter stated that he would have struggled to achieve everything he did if it weren't for the constant strong support from friends and family.
- He didn't let racism destroy his life, but instead turned his career to helping others who experienced similar situations to him. This included creating hostels for Aboriginal children, helping found the FCAATSI, and establishing the first Australian Aboriginal Church.
