  • "The others understood too when Tariq straightened up, standing on one leg. When he began hopping towards Khadim, then charging him, his unstrapped leg raised high over his shoulder like a sword." (Hosseini 134). This scene is important because it shows how much Tariq cares for Laila, and he would do anything to keep her safe.
  • "Laila peeked from the top of the stairs. She watched the stranger sit down with her parents. He leaned toward them. Said a few muted words. Then Babi's face was white, and getting whiter... and Mammy was screaming, screaming, and tearing at her hair"(Hosseini 137,138). This scene is important because the death of Ahmad and Noor change the household greatly, and more specifically Mammy's lifestyle.
  • "Mammy lay in bed most days. She wore black. She picked at her hair and gnawed on the mole below her lip. When Mammy was awake, Laila found her staggering through the house" (Hosseini 141). This science is critical because it shows how the death of her two sons has made her incapable of doing anything. This leaves Laila and Babi to do everything around the house.
  • "Kabul's day of reckoning had come at last. And when rockets began to rain down on Kabul, people ran for cover. Mammy did too, literally."(Hosseini 172). This scene is essential because it shifts from a cheerful mood to another gloomy atmosphere. Now there is trouble between two people in the city of Kabul.
  • "Giti, with whom Laila had exchanged secret notes in class, whose fingernails she had polished, whose chin hair she had plucked with tweezers. Giti, who was going to marry Sabir, the goalkeeper. Giti was dead. Dead. Blown to pieces." (Hosseini 178,179). This was an important event as now the streets were not safe, and due to this, everyone had to relocate to a different place.
