- The book focuses around two main character, Sara and Emiliano Zapata, who are siblings. It switches points of view throughout the book. This is the last time Sara sees her best friend Linda Fuentes who is later kidnapped, like many other girls have been in Juarez, Mexico. Although they are having an argument, they are not really mad at each other and always make up quickly.

- In this picture, Sara is at work(she works for the newspaper) writing an article about her best friend Linda who has been kidnapped. Sara has been writing columns about these girls that have gone missing.(called the Desaparecidas)
- Sara receives a death threat that says, "If you publish anything of Linda Fuentes, we will kill you and your family." Looking at this, Sara is scared inside, but decides to ignore it and continue it for her best friend. Even when they figure out it has been sent by the state police, Sara continues.
- Meanwhile, Emiliano faces a hard decision of whether or not to take an offer he receives at a party or not to. Alfredo Reyes wants to use his pinatas to bring drugs to the U.S. He also wants to be a part of Perla Rubi's life, who he is madly in love with. But in order to do so, he must act against his will.
- On his way to the U.S. through the desert, Emiliano is attacked by the same men who tried to hurt his sister, Sara, and is left in bad condition. Dying in the desert, he realizes that what he did was wrong and the reason for what he did. He is saved by Gustaf and Lupe and given a second chance at life to make better decisions for himself.
- In order to save her friend and escape the angry men looking for her, Sara knows she must go to the United States to find her father, who had abandoned them for years, and to find her best friend, Linda. So she sets out on her long journey.
