- Mahayana Buddhism
- I will gladly describe Mahayana Buddhism. This is a type of Buddhism that embraced newer ideas and took place in Northern Asia. One new idea they brought in was a bodhisattvas. A Bodhisattvas is a person who is on the path toward bohdi.
- I have heard many different things people have said about nirvana. Can you give me a clear definition on what it is?
- Nirvana
- Nirvana is a state of happiness and peace. Many Buddhists meditate at the bohdi tree, go on missionaries such as the four journeys, or sometimes visit stupas to find nirvana.
- Earlier you told me about Mahayana Buddhism, but isn’t there another branch of Buddhism?
- Theravada Buddhism
- Buddhism originated in Northern India, and then spread to Southern Asia due to trade routes. This is how Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism practices evolved and became the religion as we know it today.
- Yes, the other major branch is called Theravada Buddhism. This is the more traditional form of Buddhism that thrived in Southern Asia. So remember, Buddhism was established from the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha or “enlightened one”.
