Drill was done all day so it was very tiring. Bands played to try to lift their spirits.
Diet
Actions were limited for African Americans. They built trenches, cooked, and fought in the Civil War. They were paid much less.

Medical treatment was very understaffed and had bad conditions. Operations were done fully awake and they usually amputated limbs. Solders died from shock and killed themselves so they didn't have to undergo the pain.

Coffee was preferred. Union troops were given beans, bacon, pickled beef—called “salt horse” by the men-dried, compressed mixed vegetables. South ate "sloosh".
Prisoner of War Camps also had terrible conditions. It smelled very bad and there was over 50,000 men died in prison camps; the number was about the same for North and South. It was very overcrowded and food was extremely limited.
Fought in forested country. Marched to the beat of a drum. Union soldiers shouted hurrah as they attacked.
