  • Why is Rome no longer ruled by kings?
  • Have you forgotten the rule of the Tarquins and that of Lucius Tarquinius Superbus?
  • All I know is that Rome is now a republic. What did this Lucius Tarquinius Superbus do that was so bad?
  • What did he do?! Do you not know the history of our own people?! Let me educate you.
  • Lucius Tarquinius Superbus gained the throne through violence. He devised a plan with his wife Tullia to have his father-in-law, King Servius Tullius, murdered so that he could become king.
  • He then reduced the senate to only his favorite senators and began conducting governmental business based on his own how he saw fit.
  • Superbus then tricked the Latins into thinking that Turnus Herdonius was planning a seditious revolution against him and Rome so that they would sentence him to death.
  • In order to take over the neighboring city of Gabii, Superbus employed anti-Roman strategies of fraud and deceit. He sent his son Sextus to infiltrate Gabii and dismantle their political structure.
  • For the final abuse of power Superbus's son Sextus raped Lucretia, the wife of Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus. He did this just to win an argument as to which man had the more virtuous wife.
  • All of these egregious abuses of power led the Roman people to regard monarchial rule as dangerous. The corruption of power by Lucius Tarquinius Superbus is what led the Roman people into a republic. This is why Rome is no longer ruled by kings.
