- Once upon a time, there was a very rich merchant named Paul who had 6 sons and 6 daughters. They were happy until multiple disasters happened: their house burned down, Paul's ships were destroyed, and his clerks stole the rest of his money. After all this, all they had left were a few possessions and a little house in the middle of nowhere.
- Paul's children felt betrayed by their friends who made no effort to help, angry they had to live in such poor conditions, and confused as to why this happened to them. Only the youngest one, named Beauty, continued to dance and sing through it all. She tried to get the others to join in, but they never did.
- For two years this continued, but they began to adjust. One day, Paul received news that one of his ships survived and had reached the harbor with a fortune's worth of cargo! The children celebrated, believing their troubles were over. Paul decided to go by himself to ask some questions, but he was just as sure that they would be rich again. Yet, Beauty wasn't sure.
- Before he left, the children asked for their father for many expensive presents to bring back with him. When it was Beauty's turn, she said, "All I want is for you to come back safely, but if I have to pick something, I would pick a rose." With that, Paul said his goodbyes and left.
- when he reached the port, he learned his old business parters thought he was dead and kept his share of the ship's treasure for themselves. In an effort to get his share, Paul spent six months and the little money he had, but he only got enough to get back to as poor as he already was. Discouraged, the merchant started home amid heavy snow.
- While he travelled, he got lost and stumbled across a valley. Despite the snow and cold surrounding it, the valley was sunny and warm and there was a garden and castle in the middle of it. Paul went inside the castle, and finding no one, he slept and woke up to find a feast that seemed to come out of nowhere! He decided he would go and bring his family back to the castle to live.
