- Marsh and Willy talked about Carl and Helen. Marsh was trying to figure out why Carl wouldn't talk to Helen and Willy tried to explained.
- "He could talk. He has never said anything to her. He could talk to her." p.99
- "No. No he couldn't. He could try but it wouldn't work like what he's doing. He can't talk to her. Not yet." p.99
- Carl did the same dance but on day four it was fifty percent rough dance and fifty percent smooth and calm. Still nothing from Helen except at the end of the dancing as Carl finished and as she skated away she did a little spin.
- "What's that?""What's that on the ice?"p.101

- Marsh and Willy got to the rinks around seven that night. No one was skating, the hockey rink was full but all the kids were staring out onto the other rink. The boys went into the warming house and they saw Carl sitting on his bed. A new Carl. The boys went back outside and stop at the boards.
- "It's a flower."
- "Yes. It's a rose. A long stemmed rose. He put it out there a few minutes ago."p.102

- Helen got to the rink at seven, She ignored how everyone was just staring at the rink and went to put her skates on in the warming house before coming back outside. She skated around the rose not paying attention to it at all.

- The music started to play and everyone looked to the warming house doors as Carl came out and walked in a straight line onto the rink Carl started to tell his life story through dance. Helen's still stood at the end of the rink but it was different now she wasn't studying Carl any more so much as waiting to see what he would do.

- Carl made his dance point to the rose it made Marsh see the rose even if Carl wasn't pointing to the rose with his fingers. Carl danced around the whole rink at the end of his dance he stood five feet from the rose. Helen picked up the rose and looked at Carl. Helen and Carl left the rink together talking side by side.
