The War That Saved My Lifetakes place between 1939-1940 during World War II in Europe.
To prepare for war, England began sending children from cities (that were likely bombing targets) to more rural areas for their safety.
At the beginning of the story, Ada and Jamie Smith live with their mother in a tiny, dilapidatedflat (apartment) in London, England with a shared bathroom in the hall of the apartment building.
Ada and Jamie are taken in by Susan Smith, who lives in the countryside in a small village in Kent, England near the English channel. Susan has a cozy, well maintained house with indoor plumbing and acres of farmland with one pony named Butter.
