- The entire story revolves around Edward not being able to love, and then learning how important love is. His deep love for Abilene is realized as he learns to love others.
- Edward learns how to deal with losing those that he has come to care deeply about. Perhaps his most devastating loss was when Sarah Ruth died.
- Edward's body and heart heal throughout his journey. One example of this is when he is thrown overboard and alone in the ocean, his heart is broken and mends again.
