- My dad's in jail for trying to shoot me and mother.
- Ghost and his mom have to run away fast while his dad shoots at them with a gun! They hide at Mr. Charles's store. His dad's terrible temper gets him sent to prison for a long time for this.
- Ghost
- And the same thing running did for me, I felt like it could do for you. But maybe I was wrong.
- Ghost is just killing time, so even though he doesn't belong, he crashes a track meet just to prove he is better than Coach's team. Coach is not happy until he sees how fast Ghost is.
- Ghost
- I was dressed. I was a Defender. I was ready.
- Coach treats the "newbies" on the team to dinner and to share secrets with each other to get everybody closer. Ghost's secret shocks everyone! After all of the secrets are told, everyone is much closer as a team.
- Coach is upset with Ghost for all of trouble he's been getting in. First getting in trouble at school, then stealing sneakers from a store for track practice. He wants to help Ghost to do better for his life.
- Ghost finally wins at life after everything that he's been through. He's part of team that accepts him, and he has great people to help him succeed. Everyone is going to see how fast Ghost can really run.
