  • Gina's Story:Gina, a beautiful girl born with Smith - Lemli-Optiz Syndrome, has such an impactful and powerful story or strength, perseverance and love. Gina's story was truly inspirational and reinforces my ideologies on becoming a teacher. Her mother, a professor at Queens College (Niki Mirabella) strived through hardships to bring up her daughter in the best way she could. The story itself resonated with me because I have a cousin who has severe autism. I've seen the struggle, and the dedication it takes to continue to strive to make that child's life as easy as possible, knowing it will be filled with hardships. Regardless, of those hardships, these children are smart, motivated and filled with an energy for life that they deserve to live!
  • 4 Ways I will help share parents voices: 1. Communicate: Communication is so important, communicating and spreading awareness of disabilities is important in helping parents and students share their voices. 2. Create a blog!: Another way to help parents share their voices is to create a blog! Parents can share their information, updates and use the online platform to speak with other parents/people who may be in the same position. It's a great way to advocate and share thoughts as well!
  • 3. Weekly Meetings: Communication is so important , providing parents with weekly meetings to discuss their child's progress or simply speaking of their week will allow for parents to share any noticeable differences in their child's behavior, learning etc. 4. PTA Meetings: Encouraging parents to partake in PTA meetings with the school is crucial in letting their voices be heard. This gives them the option of reaching out to more than one person, and educating other parents, and staff members.
