- By the 1800s, European nations controlled most of the world. In Africa, as in many other countries, local people were forced to provide raw materials for European companies.
- The desire to Christianize the world.
- Christianity is the best and superior religion in the world. Britain is the world's most pure and rightful country.
- By the 1820s, national pride (nationalism) increased dramatically in several European countries. Reports of military victories became popular subjects of newspapers and books, as shown above. This helped unify populations and create national identities.

- Supporters of European imperialism had three main reasons. One of them was cultural superiority, or racism. Many whites or Caucasians considered other races, including Africans, to be inferior. Theorists promoted the idea that some races were more evolved and developed than others.

- Christian missionaries helped spread Western culture and part-took in nationalism. They aimed to target non-Christians and convert them to Christians. The desire to Christianize the world provided another important excuse for imperial conquest.
