  • Act 4 ofThe Cruciblewritten by Arthur Miller
  • This is the town of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Reverend Parris's daughter Betty had fallenill for an unknown reason, however many fear it was a result of witchcraft. Witnesses suspected Betty, Abigail, and Tituba the slave to be main perpetrators. After Tituba's confession, the question of Abigail's involvement is high in the air.
  • John Proctor, who is soon to be the center of all blame, accuses Abigail for adultery to save his wife from allegations. Mary Warren then accuses John of forcing her to sign the devil's book, ultimately posing him as the main perpetrator.
  • Take me home, Devil! Take me home (Miller 123).
  • Tituba and Sarah Good have been imprisoned for so long to the point that they have accepted the Devil as their savior and their escape from guilt. They have been driven insane and act like they are hallucinating.
  • Tell him I'm goin', Tituba! Now you tell him Sarah Good is goin' too (Miller 123)
  • Afraid of the upcoming chaos and her own life, Abigail fled after robbing Parris. Although this was a toll on Parris, he sees this as a way to prove that Abigail's allegations of others are not to be trusted.
  • My daughter tells me how she heard them speaking of ships last week, and tonight I discover my - my strongbox is broke into - Parris (Miller 126).
  • Your soul alone is the issue here, Mister, and you will prove its whiteness or you cannot live in a Christian country. Will you tell me now what persons conspired with you in the Devil's company?
  • Now out from the dungeon, Proctor is consulted by Danforth, Hale, his wife Elizabeth, and others. Danforth, eager to keep his power as judge through trials, constantly asks John about the truth. John's clarifications would put Danforth in a more comfortable spot about his job.
  • I speak my own sins; I cannot judge another.I have no tongue for it (Miller 141).
  • He would not answer aye or nay to his indictment; for if he denied the charge they'd hang him surely, and auction out his property. So he stand mute, and died Christian under the law (Miller 135)
  • Due to contempt of court and not revealing witnessed information, Giles Corey was ultimately executed by the weight of crushing stones. He did not confess to his crimes in order for the safety of his family's property. Proctor wept for Corey and his family.
