- Once they see land and Pi gets in the shallow area of water, Richard Parker jumps over him and starts to swim away.
- They touch land in Mexico where Richard Parker runs away, and then Pi is all by himself laying in the sand, crying.
- "It was not because I was overcome at having survived my sea ordeal, though I was. Nor was it the presence of my brothers and sisters, though that too was very moving. I was weeping because Richard Parker had left me unceremoniously. What a terrible thing it is to botch a farewell". (285)
- the questioning begins with the two agents making small talk with Pi about his trip, their trip, and the fact that he is hungry. The investigator's main goal is to find out what happened to the ship. As they begin Pi just keeps asking for more cookies.

- Pi tells them the entire story including all of the animals and Richard Parker, and they don't believe him they continue to tell him they only want the real story as he insists it is.
- That didn't happen!
- Pi then goes on to tell them the exact same story but with people instead of animals, and they start to believe it. Until they notice the similarities. In the end the report states they do not have enough evidence to determine the cause of the sinking ship, but he does put in it the Pi was with a tiger.
- "I know what you want. You want a story that won't surprise you. that will confirm what you already know. That won't make you see higher or firth or differently. You want a flat story. An immobile story. You want dry, yeastless factuality". (302)
