  • Wow! Look at all the land we have!
  • Before the Punic Wars, Rome was a young Republic. The Romans did not have much land before the wars, but these wars would help Rome expand their territory and become a powerful empire.
  • Carthage was very large and powerful before the Punic Wars. They had lots of land, and before the rise of the Romans, they were the most powerful city in the region. These wars changed Carthage’s power drastically.
  • Oh no! Our city is ruined!
  • The first Punic War was a naval battle. Carthage was expected to win because they were very experienced on water, and the Romans were not. The Romans equipped their ships with grappling hooks and used gangplanks to invade the other ships. In the end, Rome won the first Punic War.
  • You took all of our land!
  • We won the war!
  • In the second Punic War, a Carthaginian general named Hannibal Barca was famous for leading an elephant army through Spain to attack Rome. Roman armies were sent to stop him, so he waited them out in the Alps Mountains. After waiting the general decides to attack Rome and they win many battles along the way, but in the end the Romans lay siege on Carthage leaving them in defeat.
  • After the second war Carthage’s economy was in shambles and they lost all their territory to Rome. Cato the elder pushed for a third Punic war to finish Carthage off. After the war Carthage was burned and destroyed and their population was either killed or sold off as slaves.
  • Romes victory expanded its territory more than any other conflict. Rome gained control over Sardinia, Corsica, and Sicily. Carthage, on the other hand, lost all of its territory and salt was sown over the city to ensure nothing would grow there again. The Punic Wars were a triumph for Rome but they caused the defeat of Carthage.
