- I need to sell some wool.
- Follow your personal legend.
- Santiago decided to sell some wool at the local dry goods store because he felt the merchant's daughter was really attractive. After speaking with the girl, he found himself thinking constantly about her.
- Melchizedek, an elderly guy, greets Santiago.The man lectures Santiago about good and bad omens and advises him to seek his own particular tale. Then he offers Santiago a Urim and Thummim for reading omens, along with two stones.
- Santiago realizes he does not want to travel to Egypt and abandons his dream. Instead, he decides to work for a crystal store in order to save enough money for some new sheep.
- After seeing the Urim and Thummim stones around a year later, Santiago makes the decision to leave the shop, give up his desire to become a shepherd once more, and continue on his quest to recover the wealth in Egypt. So that he may get there, he joins a caravan.
- Arriving to the oasis is the caravan. There Santiago meets Fatima and develops feelings for her.
- The camel driver gathers everyone and tell them that a breakout of tribal war keeps them from continuing their journey.
