- Horatio and the other guards see a ghostly figure. It appears to be the dead King Hamlet. Horatio sees the ghost, now has a decision to make:Tell Hamlet, or not to tell Hamlet?
- Act 1 Scene 4
- Hamlet returns home devastated upon hearing of the loss of his father. He is also upset that his mother married his uncle. Instead of being consoled, he is berated by his parents. He is called "unmanly", and that he shouldn't mourn anymore, so he can appear happy for the betterment of the nation.
- Act 1 Scene 5
- Laertes, Ophelia's brother, hates Hamlet, and speaks bad of him, telling his sister they should stop dating, for he is a bad man and doesn't care about her feelings. Polonius, their father, also comes in and orders Ophelia to cut off all communication with Hamlet. This shows gender roles in the play, as Ophelia doesn't do any thinking for herself.
- Act 2 Scene 1
- Hamlet, Horatio, and Marcellus are walking along when the ghost appears before them. Hamlet immediately believes without question it is the ghost of his father. The ghost is beckoning Hamlet to follow him so they can talk.
- The ghost tells Hamlet that King Claudius, his uncle, is the one who murdered his father, King Hamlet. He tells him he poisoned him. Hamlet is outraged upon hearing this, and vows revenge.
- Completely beaten down and broken up, a disheveled Hamlet bursts into Ophelia's room. He grabs her and yells in her face, extremely frightening her. Then, he immediately feels regret, sighs, and walks out.
