They have a fun time in the forest crossing a stream
The friends excitedly enter an expanse of large, towering flowers.
The main character, Tarryn, exclaims to her friends that they should go explore the forest. A medium shot is used to show her excited facial expression as well as her friends behind her and the outskirts of the forest in the background. Soft and cheerful music with an upbeat tune and gentle instruments will play in the background to highlight the normality and the happy, carefree attitudes of the friends. The lighting will be high key and bright, streaming from the sun behind them, again to emphasise the pleasant and unbothered moods of the friends. The main character will be wearing bright colours to show she’s feeling bold and happy and casual clothes to show how oblivious she is of what’s to come. The background will have vibrant colours such as the bright blue sky and lush green trees to make the forest look harmless and inviting.
A flower mysteriously shakes
A long shot to show all of them laughing and having a fun time while still showing the pretty, lush and inviting setting of flowers, glistening water and trees. The high key lighting is slightly covered by the trees so that it’s no longer totally bright. This foreshadows the darkness and disruption that’s to come. There’s no music in this scene. We can only hear the distant forest sounds and the main focus is on the sound of the kids’ laughter to emphasise their obliviousness. We clearly see the prop of a leaf sitting on Tarryn’s shoulder as this is important to the later plot events.
They wind through the flowers and branch off into two groups.
The friends come across an expanse of bright, beautiful, towering flowers. They decide to walk through them. We see an extreme long shot that encapsulates the enormity of the expanse and shows how tiny the characters are compared to the flowers. The lighting for the shot is bright to start off with, but it quickly becomes gloomy and dim, as if clouds are shifting over the sky. The music is low violins that are slow and deliberate and could be perceived as either ominous or comforting. This reflects the deceptive nature of the flowers and emphasises how they look both strange and poisonous and beautiful and exciting.
Tarryn and her friend stand next to one of the flowers as it shakes and releases a spray
We see a close-up shot of one of the large, purple flowers mysteriously shaking. The close-up indicates the significance of the flower in the events to follow. The lighting is now fully dimmed and we hear the characters chattering in the distance and noises that sound like either laughter or screams. The music is the same slow violins and the sky is no longer as bright and cloudless.
The friends wind through the flowers, chattering and happy, and branch off into two groups as they want to explore different areas. This shot is a high angle shot to give the impression of something dark looming over them and to make them look weak and powerless. The lighting is dim to enhance the foreboding atmosphere and the music is picking up pace and urgency. The grass doesn’t look as bright anymore and the flowers look sharper and brighter, blindingly bright.
We see a medium shot of Tarryn with the friend she’s with that also includes a big purple flower. We see the lead falling from Tarryn’s shoulder onto the ground and the lighting is slightly brighter on this leaf to ensure that the audience notices it. The characters’ facial expressions and body language look confused and surprised and the shot is effective in showing this while also showing the flower as it shakes, too. The lighting flickers to show the characters are realising the disruption go their fun and the high key lighting is focused on the flower. We hear insistent, thumping music that starts to build up to the climax and we hear the characters’ breathing stop as they draw in breath.
