- Marty Preston and his family live up in the hills of West Virginia. He lives with his two sisters and his parents.
- Climax
- While out walking one day by the river Marty sees a beagle. The beagle follows him home and Marty names his Shiloh.
- Falling Action
- Marty suspects Shiloh had been beaten by his previous owner. His dad says that the dog is probably Judd Travers´ hunting dog. They take the dog back to Judd and Judd kicks it when it gets out of the car which angers Marty.
- Resolution
- Marty one morning sees the beagle again near his house. Instead of taking the dog back to Judd he builds a pen on his hill for the dog. Shiloh one night gets attacked and injured in his pen by a German Shepherd. His dad finds out they he was hiding the dog.
- They take the dog to their Doc Murphy, the local doctor, and he keeps Shiloh overnight. Judd finds out they´d been harboring the dog and he shows up at their house. He says the family can keep the dog until hes healed.
- Marty takes the dog back to Judd and catches him shooting a deer out of season, so Marty threatens to blackmail him and Judd makes him a deal to buy the dog by doing work for him. Marty does the work and buys the dog from Judd.
