  • Anandibai was born as Yamuna on 31 March 1865, Her parents Gunputrao Amritaswar Joshi & Gungabai Joshi came from a long lineage of wealthy landlord family in Kalyan of Bombay Presidency.

  • Her parents had been landlords in kalyan but had misplaced their economic wealth. As that became the exercise at that point, Yamuna became married at the age of 9 to Gopalrao Joshi, a widower almost 20 years her senior, who worked as a postal clerk.

  • At the age of fourteen, Anandibai gave birth to a boy, but the child lived only for a total of ten days due to lack of medical care. This proved to be a turning point in Anandi's life and inspired her to become a physician.

  • Higher education of women was uncommon in the conservative Hindu society, & to become a professional woman was unheard of Gopalrao nevertheless avowed to send Anandi to the United States for medical education. This attracted even more criticism from the people around them.

  • Before she went to the United States, Anandibai addressed a public hall in 1883, where she expressed her disappointment for the lack of women doctors in India. After her motivating speech in the public gathering, she expressed her views on studying medicine in America. She also stressed the need of female doctors in India and stated that Hindu women can be better doctors for other Hindu women. Anandibai's health had started to decline but Gopalrao had urged her to go to America so that she can set an example for other women in the country.
  • Anandibai was enrolled in the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania and completed her two-year course in medicine at the age of 19. She graduated with an MD in 1886 with the topic of her thesis being 'Obstetrics among the Aryan Hindoos'. Despite practicing medicine for only two to three months, she rose to fame for her sheer determination and hardwork, to become the first Indian female to study western medicine, becoming an inspiration to all others who came after her.
