- Battle of Antietam: The battle of Antietam was considered to be the bloodiest battle in the American Civil War. The battle of Antietam started on the day of September 17, 1862. Despite this battle being the bloodiest of them all, it only lasted one day. There were a total of 22,717 casualties. This battle was fought between the Confederate Army and the Union Army. The Union Army won even though the North had more losses than the South.
- Roles of African American Men in the War: The Union Army had over 179,000 African American men serving in over 160 units, with more serving in the Navy and in support positions, it was composed of both northern free African Americans and runaway slaves from the South Confederacy. In the Confederacy, African-Americans were still salves, they served in labor positions, as a slave labor force, tending to the master's needs in camp, and were entrusted with a master's personal effects if he was killed and returned them to his family.
- Sherman's March to the Sea: From November 15 until December 21, 1864, Union General William T. Sherman led some 60,000 soldiers on a 285-mile march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia. The purpose of Sherman's March to the Sea was to frighten Georgia's civilian population into abandoning the Confederate cause.
- The assassination of President Abraham Lincoln: John Wilkes Booth shot and killed president Abe. Lincoln in a theatre.
- Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse: People surrendered at the courthouse.
- Attack on Fort Sumter: When President Abraham Lincoln announced plans to resupply the fort, Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard bombarded Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, kicking off the Battle of Fort Sumter. After a 34-hour exchange of artillery fire, Anderson and 86 soldiers surrendered the fort on April 13.
