  • A man has to make his own way - has to look after himself. And I'm taking as a hard headed, practical man of business. And I say there isn't a chance of war or the Titanic sinking.
  • I’d like some information, if you don't mind, Mr Birling. Two hours ago a young woman died on the infirmary. She'd been taken there this afternoon because she had swallowed a lot of strong disinfectant. Burnt her inside out, of course.
  • The Birlings are celebrating Sheila and Geralds engagement.

  • Mr Birling is shown as self-important and selfish. The playwright, Priestly, uses dramatic irony to show the audience that Mr Birling is not as wise as he thinks he is as the audience know that the war did happen and the Titanic did sink.
  • The inspector arrives and questions Mr Birling over the death of Eva, the girl who worked in his factory.

  • Mr Birling refuses to see the connection between his actions sacking the girl, and the girl's later death. He will not accept any responsibility . Gerald backs him up.
  • The inspector questions Sheila and she confesses how she got Eva the sack from her next job working at Milwards.
