  • Triangular trade: By the end of the 17th centaury the triangular trade method was firmly established.
  • In 1788, Britain stole the continent now known as Australia from its indigenous black people and established it as a prison colony. In 1788, the colonisation effort began. The first colony of New South Wales was established by a fleet of 11 ships with 736 convicts, British troops, and a governor.

  • The movement of people in the industrial revolution included the transportation of convicts, slaves and also the movement of free settlers.
  • The movement of free settlers
  • Ships loaded with cotton, timber, tobacco, and furs crossed the Atlantic to Britain and Europe. From Britain and Europe, the ships, now loaded with manufactured goods, headed to Africa. The final leg of the triangular trade route was the return to America with their holds full of slaves. Historians estimate that over 12 million Africans were transported to the slave markets of Europe and Americans between the 16th and 19th centuries.

  • People who were unemployed or on low wages struggled to survive in the Industrial Revolution. The British Government started housing prisoners in rotting hulks and were kept moored in harbours and ports. But then the hulks became overcrowded and unsafe, so another solution was found – the transportation of convicts first to North America and then to Britain’s colonies in Australia. 162 000 prisoners were transported to Australia in 1788 and 1868.
  • Many migrants have been drawn to the country in the hope of securing a better life, seeking economic opportunity or relief from conflict in their homelands. The pull factors associated with the free movement of settlers are the cheap or free grants of lands drew millions of immigrants away from the overcrowded cities in Europe to the New World. Push factors are desire to escape poverty, famine, or political upheaval.
