  • The Athenian general, Themistocles, tricked Xerxes, King Darius' son, to believe that the Athenian navy had retreated. This caused the Persians to pursue the Athenians into Salamis, a small strip of islands. The Persian ships were large and bulky, while the Athenians' ships were small and easy to repeatedly smash into the Persian ships. The Athenians sunk most of the Persian navy.

  • Xerxes then retreated with his remaining army. The Athenians and their allies pursued the Persians to the outskirts of the town of Plataea. The alliance between the Athenians and Spartans was a key factor in winning the Battle of Plataea. Across the Aegean Sea, a Greek fleet defeated Xerxes and the Persians for the last time.

  • In the end, thousands of Greeks died, and the City of Athens was destroyed due to the Persian War.
