  • What will we do if they get upset?
  • Let's tax Whiskey. Everyone loves that!
  • What are we going to do about this debt issue?
  • Why are they coming after ME and MY livelihood. Whiskey is how I support my family out here.
  • Papa, are we gonna starve now that Washington is taking all our money?
  • This is what you get for trying to steal our money. We worked HARD for this and you're not gonna take it away.
  • Please stop this! I am just doing my job.
  • Come on everyone! Let's the tax collector and his entire family!!!
  • When the US ratified the constitution, they had to pay off the debt from all of the states. Alexander Hamilton thought that the fairest way to collect this money was to tax whiskey and other alcoholic beverages.
  • Burn his house to the GROUNDDDDDD!!!
  • Farmers to the left of the Appalachian mountains were very angry with the US Government for taxing whiskey. It was very expensive to transport barley through the mountains so farmers would turn it into whiskey because it was more valuable and easier to transport.
  • Proclamation......
  • The settlers were extremely angry with how the US government was taxing their hard earned income. They rebelled against the government by tarring and feathering the federal revenue officers.
  • The US Government has TOO MUCH POWER. The President is going to become a King if this continues.
  • The US Government FINALLY has the power to DO. This constitution is even better than I expected.
  • The rebels were very upset with the US Government. In 1794, 500 of them came together and attacked the home of a regional tax inspector. They burned the house to the ground, sending a message to the government that they would not be stopped.
  • President George Washington authorized a proclamation that told the rebels to go home. It also called for the militia from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia. With an army of 13,000 soldiers, the US was going to stop the rebellions by force but the rebels disbanded. The troops remained to keep order and two rebels were tried for treason but then pardoned by the President.
  • After the rebellion was over, two sides came out. Thomas Jefferson believed that the US Government had too much power because they could use so much force to stop rebellions. Federalists like Alexander Hamilton believed that the Whiskey Rebellion showed how great the new constitution was. The US Government could finally get things done.
