The American Revolution was not just a war, but a change in ideas about government. Before the war, Americans demanded their rights as English citizens, that idea was replaced with the idea of republcanism.
Common Sense Gets Published
By July 1775, moderates in Congress draft the Olive Branch Petition, ask the king to restore peace. The king rejects the petition and sends British navy to block American ships from leaving the ports.
The End of the War
1777, France begin to give secret aid to the Americans. France also convince Spain to join and help the Americans.
The Treaty of Paris 1783
In 1776, Most Americans still wanted to avoid a final break from Britain. Common Sense was a complete break from Britain was necessary. Thomas Paine ridicules the idea that kings ruled by the will of god. All monarchies were corrupt. And calls King George III, a "Royal Brute"
By 1781, most of the of the fighting took place in Virginia. The Battle of Yorktown would be the last major battle of the American Revolution.
It officially ended the Revolutionary War. The States were now independent. It's boundaries would be the Mississippi River on the West, Canada on the North and Spanish Florida on the south.
