  • Hello! My name is George Hewes. I was a poor shoe maker and rebel colonist who helped lead the Boston Tea Party.
  • I hated the British and was a protester at the Boston Massacre where I was injured when a British soldier hit me in the shoulder with the butt of his musket.
  • After the Boston Massacre, King George repealed many of his taxes, but there was still a large tax on tea, and the King made it to where we weren't allowed to buy tea from anywhere but England. This made us really mad. In fact, many colonists decided to stop drinking tea and started drinking coffee.
  • Down with the tyrant King George!
  • No taxation without representation!
  • On the night of December 16, 1773, men met in churches all over Boston to decide what to do next.
  • We have to stop those three ships from landing in the harbor!
  • Let every man do his duty and be true to his country!
  • Let's disguise ourselves like Indians, sneak on board the ships, and destroy all the tea!
  • After the meeting, we dressed up like Indians and darkened our skin with coal dust from the blacksmith's shop. We also found small hatchets that we could use to bust open the tea crates so it would be ruined when it went in the water. We didn't tell each other our names so if anyone was captured, they wouldn't be able to tell the British the names of anyone else involved.
  • Let every man keep his own secret and risk the consequences for himself.
  • We went to Griffins Warf in Boston Harbor where the ships were anchored and split into three groups. All the groups boarded the three ships at the same time.
  • Captain, give me the keys to the hatches where the tea is kept! We need 12 candles too. Now! We can't see down there in this darkness.
  • We busted open all the crates of tea with our hatchets and threw them into the harbor. It took us about three hours. Some of the people on the dock tried to salvage some of the tea to take home and use.
  • In total, we destroyed 342 crates of tea, but nothing else. We didn't hurt any of the soldiers or damage the boats. The only other thing that was damaged was a padlock owned by one of the British soldiers, and we replaced it for him the next day. All we had wanted to do was destroy the tea so that it could not be sold and taxed. We wanted to send a message to King George III, and I think we did just that.
  • This was the stillest night that Boston has enjoyed for many months!
  • When King George found out what happened, he was angrier than ever! He punished Massachusetts by signing the "Intolerable Acts" which took away the colony's right to self-governance and directly led to our War for Independence.
  • I'll make them pay for this!
  • During the war, I fought with the Massachusetts Militia. I lived to be 98 years old and was one of the last surviving participants of the Boston Tea Party.
