  • Rising Action
  • “If you see this boy... do not – I repeat, do not – try to reason with him.”
  • The story is introduced in the Bergeron's home, in the year 2081, where both George and Hazel sat watching ballerinas perform on TV. However, as a result of a series of constitutional amendments, all people living in the United States at this time period were equal and were to share the same and like physical appearance, intellect, and athleticism.
  • Climax
  • “I am the Emperor!”
  • Fourteen-year-old Harrison Bergeron is taken away from his parents, George and Hazel, by the government. Harrison was put into prison for being mentally and physically outstanding, thus being a potential threat to society. George and Hazel aren't fully aware of the tragedy. Hazel's lack of awareness due to her average intelligence and George's handicap make it hard for them to comprehend what had happened.
  • Falling Action
  • George and Hazel are watching ballerinas dance on the television when suddenly, the ballet program was immediately stopped by a news bulletin. The news bulletin had shown a picture of George and Hazel's son, Harrison, recently escaping from prison. In the news bulletin, Harrison is shown as a threat to the government as being a dangerous criminal wanted "on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government."
  • Resolution
  • “I forget... something real sad on television.”
  • Suddenly, Harrison appears on the stage, interrupting the news bulletin, declaring himself as "Emperor", as he removes all his handicaps. He then calls for his empress, which then a ballerina rises and joins him. Harrison then proceeds to remove the handicap devices of the ballerina and musicians, instructing them to play music. The pair then proceed to dance and sway to the song being orchestrated.
  • As Harrison dances to the music with his empress, Diana Moon Clampers, the Handicap General comes into the studio, and shoots both Harrison and his empress, killing them instantly.
  • George, who had left the living room to get a beer, returns to find Hazel in tears. When George asks Hazel her reason for crying, she does not remember and cannot inform him of their son's death. They continue living their limited lives.
