- "What is your favorite memory Giver? You don't have to give it away yet. Just tell me about it, so I can look forward to it."
- "Lie down. I'm happy to give it to you"
- "Number One you have been assigned to Fish Hatchery. Thank you for your childhood."
- I feel joy and happiness. There is a room filled with people and it feels warm. Through a window, it shows that it's snowing. I can see colored lights and a tree inside a house. There are lit candles and I can smell cooking. I can hear soft laughter and I can see a dog sleeping on a floor. There are presents wrapped in ribbons and children and adults are passing them around. There are parents and older people smiling on a couch. The children are opening the gifts and everyone is hugging.
- "Now Number 4 Asher. All of us in the community know and enjoy Asher. When the committee began to consider Asher's assignments we knew there were some possibilities that had to be discarded. So, Asher we have given you the Assignment Of Assistant Director of Recreation. Thank you for your childhood."
- "Number One you have been assigned to Fish Hatchery. Thank you for your childhood."

- "What did you perceive?"
- "Warmth, happiness, family, and I can't quite get the right word for it."

- "Number 18, Fiona. You have been given the Assignment of Caretaker. Thank you for your childhood."
- She skipped me! She made a mistake, but the Chief Elder doesn't make mistakes at the Ceremony Of 12. Did I forgot my number or something?
- "The word is love."
- "I was thinking that, but I can see how that memory wasn't a very practical way to live. The old wouldn't be well taken care of, but I was also thinking I wish we could be that way. I like the feeling of love, but I guess I do understand it wouldn't work very well."
- "Number One you have been assigned to Fish Hatchery. Thank you for your childhood."
- "Next 20, Pierre."
- "Number 18, Fiona. You have been given the Assignment of Caretaker. Thank you for your childhood."
